Dreamy tables and so much more…

tablescape

When it comes to designing your dream tablescape, we love to create a setting that encompasses your style and personality in one. Good design considers the finest details to ensure a cohesive style. Design always draws the eye from each element, leading towards the main features. To start, make sure you have the following elements decided before sourcing items; Style and your colour palette.

To start, we want to know the details of what your dream style is. Whether it be Boho Chic, Modern and Bright, Moody and Romantic, Earthy or Disco balls all round; We start here, to know the basics of each next decision.

Now that your dream theme and style is out on the table, we talk colour palettes. Within each style, there is an aligning colour palette. Within that, we can choose which colour you would most like to be the pop or the statement of your tablescape. For example, if we were doing a modern and bright tablescape, the colour palette may be gold, white, dusty pink, with a pop of burnt orange. This pop of colour would be what we would guide the florist to add to the arrangements and use to choose certain elements of the tablescape design.

When it comes to a tablescape, one of the most important factors, as well as what is already mentioned above, is the layering. Now when we say layering, at Wild and Whim this means ensuring that the table does not just look like a one-dimensional flat surface. We want levels, we want textures, and we want that wow factor. Below are the elements of a tablescape which create exactly this.

  1. Table surface & colour. This means whether you go for white tables, Oak, Plywood etc.

  2. Table linen. Does the surface need to be covered? If so, choose simple table linen. It is always best to use good quality stonewashed linen. If the table surface is nice, a linen table runner adds texture and depth. You can lay it flat along the centre of the table, our favourite is layering the table runner, keeping it somewhat ruffled for the depth.

  3. Plates: Plates are a make or break situation when it comes to design. It is an element which can add shape and texture. We love a ceramic plate which is imperfectly rounded, and again to layer a smaller one on top. Depending on your style originally chosen, plates are a world of opportunity. From colour to shape to material. For example, if you have woven placemats, having glass plates with a gold rim layered can be a stunning accent to see layers and textures.

  4. Silverware. Now this one is important. Commonly people stick to your very classic silverware, but to add that special touch, we love using silverware with some finesse. This adds style and class to any table setting. Whether a matte gold or charcoal grey, anything beats the classic home silver kitchen look.

  5. Linen napkins: This is one of the favourites, as it comes with such a wide space for opportunity. How you tie and/or fold your linen napkin is the element to your place setting which adds layering and style either underneath or on top of or to the side of your plate. One of our go-to’s is knotted linen.

  6. Name cards: When it comes to having your guests know where to sit, there are beautiful and creative ways to add texture and bring in your colour palette. One of our favourites is using calligraphers who make your vision a reality. Their eye for detail creates fine lines and a raw beautiful style. An example is Calligraphers using ink made from walnuts, and having naturally dyed linens ribbon tied to a natural paper.

  7. Glassware: Glassware again is where you can choose to make a pop statement. Usually, on the table, it is nice to include a water glass, and wine or champagne glass. It is important to use glasses which are proportionate. For example, having a water glass the same size as your wine glass is an eyesore. Always think levels. So water glass is smaller than wine glasses. A fun way to bring a pop of colour and design is to use a glass goblet. This is perfect for the Boho brides.

  8. Decor: This is the centre of the table which should be the main point for guests' eyes to be drawn to. We love candles as it creates ambience and romance to any tablescape. Again think levels. If you are having taper candles, for example, the holders should always be at different levels. And always remember this; Elements should always be placed in 3’s and 5’s. So either bunches of 3 varying candle sizes or 5 placed along with the table. Get creative with your use of vases and greenery. If you are creating a Dessert themed wedding, Instead of flowers, use cactuses and succulents along the centre of your table and Terracotta pots instead of vases.

  9. Table numbers: This should match the name cards. The table number holder can bring accents of wood, colour, metals etc to match your theme. Get creative with this one. And the material of the table number often looks best matching the name cards or at least having the writing in the same font and colour.

Now that you have all the elements for your beautiful tablescape, it is time for you and your loved ones to gather, celebrate, eat and drink as you enjoy your wedding!

Below is an image from one of our styled shoots. The theme was imperfect and earthy. We had a neutral colour palette. This is a perfect example of colours, textures, height and layers.
